Every year from spring to summer, thousands of seabirds come to Helgoland to breed. Among them is the northern gannet, which builds large nests on the cliffs. In doing so, the birds unwittingly incorporate large amounts of plastic waste from the sea, posing a threat to themselves and other bird species.
